2017 Parent Welcome Letter

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year!   Class placement for this coming school year for your child/children appears on a label inside the envelope.  


As was announced on our PTG FaceBook page and our Hallsville website several weeks ago, on the first day of school every student in Grade 1-5 will receive a free backpack, along with certain supplies.  This tremendous donation will be made by The Harvard Pilgrim Foundation, through our City Year program.  We are so excited to be the beneficiary of this gift!   Please see the website for the exact supplies that will be included.


Crews have been working all summer to get our school looking great for the first day.  The floors are beautifully waxed and our gym and foyer are getting the final touches of a complete paint job in our school colors of blue and white!   Teachers are working on setting up their classrooms and things are starting to “buzz” in the hallways.   We are almost ready to welcome your children!


Below are some critical items to get us all through the first few days:


  • If you have a child in Kindergarten, you will receive a Kindergarten-specific letter, too.   New this year, Kindergarten starts the same day as the other students.  Please spread this word to your friends and family.


  • Arrival and Dismissal

  • The starting time for all MSD elementary schools is 8:30 a.m.   For the first few days, meet your child’s teacher outside along the fence.   Then, as before, the children will come in either the side door (K-2) or the front door (3-5).   

  • Dismissal is outside @ 2:50. (Kindergarten: 2:40 at the side door.) Please pick up your children on time and check in with the teacher before taking them out of line.  Remember, our staff is getting to know you and your students.   

  • If you have an older child who will be walking home without an adult, or if he/she will be going home with a neighbor, a note must be sent in and given to the teacher.

  • There are parking restrictions in place for the protection of your children.   If you must drive to drop off or pick up your child, please park in a legal spot and walk to the school yard.

    • There is no stopping or  parking in front of the school at any time--not even for a minute.   While we are a walking school, there are several buses/vans that stop at Hallsville and the front of the school is reserved for that purpose.  Please share this with relatives who may be picking up as well.

    • The City Traffic Office has decided that the opposite side of Jewett Street is now going to be a no-parking zone during arrival and pick-up hours.   Signs are expected to be put up soon.   This is new, and it is important to the children’s safety.  Please do not ask them to run over to you as you pull up, as this risks their immediate safety.   


  • If your child wants to have breakfast at Hallsville, they should enter through the side doors at 8:15 a.m.  This will give them plenty of time to eat before the 8:30 start.  


  • Breakfast and Lunch are available for purchase.  The prices:  Lunch $2.30;   Breakfast $1.30.   Milk alone is $0.50.   Free and Reduced lunch forms will be sent home on the first day of school.  Thank you for returning them promptly.  Menus will be sent home on the first day, but may be viewed prior the start of school at www.mansd.org.


  • Hallsville children are offered a fresh fruit snack during the day.  This menu will be published when the program starts.


  • All communication will come home in your student’s red folder.   Much will come home the first week, so please work with your child to get into the habit of giving it to you daily and returning it the next day.   After the first week, the bulk of the important information will come home on Wednesdays, as before.   However, we will not have white envelopes this year, only the red folders.   Please communicate with your child’s teacher if your child has a problem with this process.   


  • Please watch for sign-up information for the 21st Century before and after school programs.  They often fill within the first few days, so return the completed paperwork in the red folders.    We have a new Coordinator for the programs -- Kristen Shimer.  Many of our students know Ms. Shimer from last year when she filled in for Kathy Scott, one of our teachers.


  • The Hallsville Handbook, along with my September Newsletter, will be sent home with your child the first week of school.  Your prompt attention to these important documents is really appreciated!    There are forms that will need your signature.


  • Just a reminder, please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Johnson,  beginning on September 1st if you have any questions about medication forms, distribution of medication, physicals, or other medical issues.  She will be happy to assist you.


  • September can be a hot month in our classrooms.   Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to keep on or near their desks.   In keeping with the MSD Dress Code, shorts must be at least as long as the fingertips;  spaghetti straps, halter tops, and flip-flops are not permitted.   Children wearing flip-flops will sit out from gym class or recess for safety reasons.
